About the radio:
This radio includes several improvements. First, it is a superheterodyne, a superior circuit design that outperforms TRF's. Second, the dial is now calibrated in frequencies and it includes a "police band".
Starting in the 1930's police stations broadcast police calls on the frequencies immediately above the broadcast band and it became desirable to "listen in".

To keep the price down, the manufacturer omitted the power transformer which required adding a resistance line cord and also did not include an RF amplifier stage which reduces the sensitivity but keeps the tube count down thus saving manufacturing costs.
All packaged in a very compact cabinet popularly known as a “mantel” radio.
